Is your Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

Optimism is an outlook on life that shouts positivity. It means you look for the good things in life and you expect to get them. Did you know though, that being an optimist is good for your health in so many ways? Optimists tend to enjoy better physical well being when compared to pessimists and are more likely to make healthy choices , like drinking in moderation or abstaining from smoking. An optimist tends to approach a challenge in a different way to a pessimist. Optimists will tend to use humour during challenges or accept them as as a necessary part of life whereas the pessimist is more likely to ignore the challenge or distance themselves from it which can lead to feeling out of control and potentially more susceptible to mental health issues. So how to cultivate an optimistic attitude ?

  • Noticing happy moments - Go through your day noticing when you are happy or when you see happiness in others. Enjoying a joke , appreciating a warm blanket on a cold day or simply taking a moment to appreciate a beautiful flower. Take time to register when you ae feeling happy and enjoy the moment

  • Challenge yourself - Trying different things proves to yourself how you can cope with different things. Learning new strategies, problem solving and trouble shooting widens your perspective and allows you to cultivate an “I can “ attitude. This is a positive coping strategy attributed to optimists

  • Physical Activity - Getting out there and moving boosts your mood and feeling good in your body helps you feel good in the mind too. Exercise can help you clear your mind and is a positive habit you can cultivate to help you thing things through should you be faced with a challenge

  • Expect good things - Feeling that good things are coming your way will tune your mind to look for the good things. We are blessed with a fresh new day every day and each day brings new possibilities . Why shouldn’t great things be just hiding round the corner ?
