Why is sleep so important ?

Being fit and healthy is not just about moving your body, it is also about giving the body sufficient rest to restore you and prepare you for the following day. Sounds good I hear you say, but how much sleep is required and how do I get the sleep I need? The National Institute on Aging recommends that you take the following steps:

  • Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per day

  • Go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every day to get your body in a good routine

  • Limit your screen time prior to bed, that means stop scrolling on the phone and watching TV, do an alternative like reading a book

  • Avoid heavy meals, alcohol or caffeine before you plan to sleep

  • Avoid naps in the afternoon for more than 30 mins
